This unique little cottage, now with all modern facilities, was once a station on the famous Welsh Highland Railway. Today the line is a steam train narrow gauge heritage railway, running from Caernarfon to Porthmadog (maximum of three trains each way daily - enquiries@ffwhr.com). Guests can either watch it go by, or put out their hand and climb aboard at the nearby halt. A listed building, the cottage is limited to its three star Visit Wales status only by its size, as its Victorian builders needed just a waiting room and a ticket office!

The cottage is situated at the top of a sloping half acre property, with the owner's bungalow, and a garden and small stream, below. At the front of the cottage, over the hedge, is the railway line and the path to Snowdon, and views of a range of mountains including Snowdon. On one side of the cottage is a patio with lake and mountains views, on the other a grassed area with seating and mountain views. Lower down a sloping grass bank gives access to the garden and stream, and a garden bench.

The well insulated cottage is equipped to a high standard and comprises an entrance hall, a lounge/diner with kitchen and a double bedroom with en-suite shower and wc. Facilities include:

  • Flatscreen 26ins colour TV
  • DVD player
  • Music centre with radio/cd/MP3 docking station
  • Comfortable armchairs
  • Electric convector heaters
  • Electric cooker
  • Microwave
  • Fridge and small freezer
  • Washing machine
  • Terrace with table and chairs
  • Recliners and barbeque
  • Cycle store
  • Garden area with stream and trees
  • Parking by cottage at top of drive

Non-smoking, and no pets, sorry.

The fully inclusive cost of £258 to £439 per week includes bed linen, towels, all heating and cancellation insurance cover. Short breaks may be available depending on season.

The path near the cottage leads to the summit of Snowdon, a 2 – 3 hour walk, with the Snowdon Sherpa bus service (bus stop 50 metres) providing links to other paths around Snowdon. A path from the nearby car park leads to a boardwalk close to the lake, tempting for a cooling swim on a summer's day.

Meals and drinks are available in all the nearby villages, with the Cwellyn Arms in Rhyd Ddu stocking a range of beers from small breweries and the Snowdonia Brewpub in Waunfawr the regular winner of a Camra Pub of the Year award.

The cottage is perfectly situated for exploring Snowdonia, the Lleyn peninsula and Anglesey. Within reach are idyllic beaches; the Italianate village of Portmeirion; famous castles; the Padarn Country Park, the rack railway to the summit of Snowdon and lots more – plus of course the whole of the Snowdonia National Park, a paradise for lovers of the great outdoors.

As well as mountain and valley walking the cottage is an ideal base for cycling, mountain biking and fell running, or just exploring all that this corner of North Wales has to offer. Though you might find that sitting by the garden stream or watching the sheep in the surrounding fields is just as enjoyable!

The cottage is in a peaceful location, yet within easy reach of the North Wales expressway (A55), which runs along the coast, and mainline railway stations at Bangor and Porthmadog.
